Guest Poet: Garry Gay
Garry Gay started writing haiku in 1975. In 1989 he became one of the co-founders of the Haiku Poets of Northern California as well as their first president from 1989-90 and was elected again from 2001-2009. In 1991 he was elected President of the Haiku Society of America. Additionally in 1991 he founded Haiku North America, a biennial haiku conference. In 1996 he co-founded the American Haiku Archives in Sacramento, California. He is the creator of the poetic form called rengay. And that is the barest possible scanning of his haiku resume!
Recent publications involving Route 9 Haiku Group members prominently include “Another Country: Haiku Poetry from Wales” edited by Nigel Jenkins, Ken Jones, and Lynne Rees, which features poems by Hilary and Haïga-Peindre en Poésie ”(Haiga-Painting) in Poetry” by Ion Codrescu, which is viewable on YouTube.
While we continue to consider Tai Pan in Halfmoon NY our home base, we have now established a second home at Taste of Thai in Ithaca NY. Our December 2011 session was held there and the fit was instantaneous and very comfortable for our hosts and us. We will continue to meet at Tai Pan, most of the time, but plan to meet in Ithaca three or four times per year. While this is partly motivated by our desire to give Tom some breaks after his years of monthly commuting from Ithaca to Halfmoon, it also seems like Ithaca is a natural place for us to be pursuing our interests in poetry and fine food.
